The Best Maybelline Concealers: review and comparison / covering up dark spots like melasma

Maybe it was the water, maybe it was the hormones. Anyhow, I spent most of my teenage years struggling with acne that I did not know I had melasma running down from my left eye to my left lips. Or maybe it was the acne pills to control my hormones that led to my melasma. I have no clue, but if my teenage years' low self-esteem was all about acne, my early 20s had to do with melasma.

I wanted to create a dewy look that said "I have put on a minimal make up today and still look at my flawless skin" but that felt like a distant dream as I was always layering concealers over foundations over concealers over color correctors,

Although I personally do not recommend these as dark circle concealers, I think that Maybelline provides one of the cheapest products for concealing dark spots without caking up my makeup. Today's post is about some of the items that I own, my thoughts on these products, and just some tips that have worked for me.

My favorite concealers from Maybelline are Dream Lumi Concealers, Fit Me Concealer, and Instant Age Rewind Eraser. Because these are drugstore products and therefore I couldn't swatch them, I have accumulated some shades that are too light and some too dark on my skin--but I use them all.

I have the shades Ivory and Nude for the Dream Lumi concealers, 10 Light and 25 Medium for Fit Me concealers, and in the shade Neutralizer for Instant Age Rewind Eraser.

Maybelline Concealers Comparison: Dream Lumi, Fit Me, Instant Age Rewind Eraser

Here are the swatches:

Just for the reference, I have a medium light complexion with yellow undertones (NC 25 in MAC, N120 in the old Makeup Forever HD foundations, 2W2 Rattan in Estee Lauder)
  • Dream Lumi in Ivory is VERY light on my skin, and I actually use this to define my brows. Highlighters tend to accentuate my large pores, so I find using Dream Lumi in Ivory to be a perfect alternative.
  • Dream Lumi in Nude is a bit brighter than my skin tone and I like to use this to define my eyeliner and lipstick as a final touch to my makeup.
  • Fit Me concealers work perfectly on my skin as a concealer, For me, the light one is more suitable for winter when I become a bit pale (as I refuse to go outdoors), and the medium more suitable for those warmer weathers.
  • I find the Instant Age Rewind to be slightly lacking in coverage, at least with regards to my needs for covering up my melasma and other dark spots. I tend to use this one to highlight my forehead, the bridge of my nose, under my eyes, and under my lips.
Here I tested how well these concealers cover up dark brown spots. My melasma is not as dark as that brown eyeliner used in these photos, but I wanted to show the extent to which these can conceal. In the following photos, you can see the result of two layers of each concealers.

The eyeliner did smudge a bit as I was testing these concealers, but you get the idea.
  • Maybelline Instant Age Rewind in Neutralizer brightens the most. Although I find this shade to be very similar to Dream Lumi in Ivory, you can see that Instant Age Rewind simply brightens without blending right into my skin (which is a good thing as a highlighter, not so much as a concealer).
  • Maybelline Dream Lumi concealers do better at concealing than Maybelline Instant Age Rewind, but these are a bit lighter in consistency than Fit Me concealers. This would be good for people who has light freckles and wants a light medium coverage.
  • Maybelline Fit Me concealers by far performed the best in concealing dark spots. These are the thickest in consistency (although not as much as NARS concealers) and can be layered easily for extra coverage.
I find all of these concealers to crease significantly under my eyes, so I don't use them for the purpose of covering up dark circles and use a color corrector instead. However, for concealing dark spots, the Maybelline Fit Me concealers conceal the most. And although I do have a stash of NARS concealers (which are fabulous by the way), I find the price of Maybelline to be appropriate for my budget as I need a concealer to cover HALF of my face and therefore these can empty out quicker than I'd like to admit.

I hope this post is helpful, and if you also have dark spots, please share your most favorite concealer!

XOXO,

HaeMin

  2. I really like the age rewind concealer, though do agree the coverage isn't huge, I usually use a corrector underneath it :) xx

  3. I adore Maybelline Instant Age Rewind the most and frankly, it's my favourite drugstore concealer. Thankfully I don't need much concealing so I only need it to look more polished!
