I've had my eyes on Tarte's Tartelette in Bloom Palette for the longest time, and every time I walked into Ulta, I swatched and admired the pigmentation of Tarte's eyeshadows, particularly the matte colors--I did, however, manage to fight the urge to get them because I thought I had dupes for most of the colors I liked in that palette and because I am more of a gliter hoor than a matte eyeshadow kind of girl.

Tarte is also know for their blushes, and particularly their holiday sets, but I also managed to fight off on those sets because I am very satisfied with my blush collection at this moment and didn't feel particularly drawn to the darker, dusty colors in their blush sets.

But then came this Tarteist Paint Palette Collector's Set which was exclusively available at Ulta. The eyeshadows in this palette looked warm enough, and for a girl who likes to have her makeup options wide open when traveling, it looked like a perfect large travel palette.

Today I wanted to share my thoughts on this palette, and hopefully this blogpost will help anyone thinking about getting this palette.

This palette has a cardboard box feel to it and its wrapped in a fabric. Not a super sturdy feeling and I do think the Sephora's exclusive Tarte holiday collection looks like a better quality.

There are a total of 24 eyeshadows in this palette each containing 0.035oz of product. I found the colors in this palette to be MUCH less vibrant than the photo you see at Ulta. For instance, the third color in the third row looked like a cranberry color at Ulta, but in real life it is much more burgundy and brown (click here to see the product image at Ulta). So that was my disappointment #1 as I am more into warm than neutral/cool toned eyeshadows.

There's a little drawer that you pull on and you get Tarteist Glossy Lip Paint in Double Tap (0.034oz), Deluxe Tarteist Lash Paint Mascara in Black (0.16oz), a Paint Brush, and another palette containing three shades in Contour 1, Contour 2, Highlight, each 0.084oz. I actually really liked this setup and found it to be quite neat.

You can take out the plastic insert and use the bottom drawer to store brushes and other products.

I was really excited to use these blush, bronzer, and highlight shades and loved how it came in as a separate palette so that I can just take these separately with me wherever I go. I'll get into the quality of this at the end, but heads up, I did not like them (that brush was nice though).

So let me first show you my swatches for this palette:

This is the first row. 'On display' and 'canvas' were okay (better than others in this row) but these swatches you see below are 4 swipes, not one. And you still can't see 'have we Met'. These probably do swatch better with a primer underneath, but if I want to use this as travel palette, I need my eyeshadows to be super easy to work with and not something that require much.

Second row was much better but nothing phenomenal either. Colors were more on a cool mauvey side and these still felt dry and needed layers after layers to be swatched evenly (and even then it doesn't look super pigmented).

Third row was better than the previous two and I liked the color selection on this row better than others. Beret is such a beautiful color with gold shimmers in it and is probably my favorite shade of this entire palette (which says a lot about this palette as being nothing super special).

Doodle is a nice color as well but not as pigmented as say the colors you get in Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Palette (reviewed here).  Also, landscape is the only shimmer color that I liked, mainly because of its (better) pigmentation. Abstract (first row) was also pretty good but that one needed layering.

So overall, the quality of these eyeshadows were not the same as those you get in Tarte's permanent eyeshadow palettes and I am disappointed.

Here is Highlight, Contour 1, Contour 2, and Tarteist Glossy Lip Paint in Double Tap.
Perhaps I am just way too used to Becca's buttery smooth and ultra pigmented highlighters, but this highlighter was so metallic and and chalky. I could not get a smooth swatch out of this color, and I layered each product at least 3 times to get this swatch. The two contour shades were beautiful, but the darker Contour shade a bit too orange for my NC25 skin tone and not really pigmented (again this swatch was layered at least 3x times).

So I am really disappointed by this palette for multiple reasons. I know some people were disappointed with the pigmentation of the eyeshadows in Sephora's Tarte holiday palette, and unfortunately I totally ignored those reviews and hoped for the best for this one--well my bad. Apparently this palette is worth $381 in value (retails for $49 at Ulta) but honestly given the quality I am still not sure if this palette is even worth $49 for me as I will not be reaching out for this one. Perhaps I got one that just happen to be underwhelming, but if the quality is consistent across all of Tarte's Tarteist Paint Palette Collector's Set, than I don't see this one getting a 5 star.

Perhaps to someone who is just beginning makeup I think this would be a rather nice gift because the palette is nicely organized in a way that you can use eyeshadows in each column to get a complete eye makeup. However, for a girl who likes her eyeshadows to be on a warmer side and who wants her shimmer eyeshadows to be foiled and metallic, this palette was a disappointment to say the least.

Actually, I am not even sure if I would like this palette if I were to ignore the fact that these swatches were heavily layered. Maybe, but I would not be thrilled as I would have if I got the eyeshadow palette with shades much more warm and vibrant, as shown on Ulta's website.

Even though this one contains waaaaay more product and is way cheaper than my previous purchase, Marc Jacob's Object of the Eye Palette (reviewed here), I can even go as far as to justify my Marc Jacobs purchase as it is the perfect travel palette for me and I would hit pan on all the colors. This one unfortunately is going to have to find a new home.

Did you get this palette? What are your thoughts? Please share!

XOXO,
HaeMin

  1. Thanks for the review. I am very fair, prefer cool tones over warm, and have hooded green eyes, so a cool, pink toned, matte palette was exactly what I was looking for. If the pigmentation isn't there though I will have to pass :(

    1. I feel like there are so many neutrals or cool tone palettes with soft buttery textures and strong pigmentation that you'd like way more than this one :( . It looked like an awesome value set thoug..... I'd suggest try these or the one at Sephora to see if you like the pigmentation (It could be that mine just happened to suck and others are great *sigh*).

  2. Fabulous review! I was on the fencer about this one but I definitely think it's a pass. I always want to love their holiday palettes but from personal experience too they are always a bust! Xx!
