Like was the case with many people, I was very excited to see that MAC included the highly rated and coveted Whisper of Gilt highlighter in its Nutcracker Sweet Face Compact. It was released on one of those days when I was pulling an all-nighter so I was lucky enough to place my order and not see it get cancelled, backordered, or whatever like other people have experienced. To help out anyone who missed out on this palette and still want Whisper of Gilt, on today's blog I wanted to compare Whisper of Gilt with its famous dupe, Laura Geller's Gilded Honey.

So first of all let me just say a little bit about this face compact. I love the packaging--it is in fact one of the few items from MAC that got me excited over the design. But I also do wish that the blush was a bit lighter (personally I preferred the blush in the peach palette).

This Nutcracker Sweet Copper Face Compact in Copper retails for $35 and I purchased mine from Nordstrom. It is currently out of stock in Nordstrom but as I am writing this, there are some peach palettes available in Bloomingdale's (click here) and Macy's (click here).

get 0.16oz of the Whisper of Gilt highlighter and 0.16oz of Pleasure Model blush. Just for comparison sake, you get the same 0.16 oz of product in Laura Geller's Gilded Honey highlighter for $26, so if you are just getting this palette for the highlighter alone, you are spending a bit more, but combined with the blush this is a good deal.

And I can honestly say that I am so impressed by the overall design of this palette. The holiday vibe is there, the patterns are absolutely gorgeous, and although I get a big kick out of destroying patterns in makeup products (call me crazy), it sort of pains me to do so with this palette.

So here are the swatches of MAC Whisper of Gilt and Pleasure Model. Both are very pigmented, and one swipe is all I needed to get mine to swatch like so. Usually I have the most difficult time taking photos of highlighters, but not with this one! :)

Here I have swatched MAC Whisper of Gilt with Laura Geller Gilded Honey. I am not so sure if MAC Whisper of Gilt in this palette is the same as the one in the original palette, but based on the one that I have I can definitely say that Gilded Honey has more peach undertone to it, is slightly darker than Whisper of Gilt which pulls more gold.

On different skin tones, these two might look very similar as they do give off a nice wet finish to the cheekbones, and honestly they both look very similar on my NC25 skin. When swatched, Gilded Honey's pigmentation is superb, but it was nothing compared to Whisper of Gilt. However when I tried it on my cheekbones, I find that Gilded Honey looked more intense, and I think maybe that has to do with the peachy undertone. As I have a yellow based skin, the more golden Whisper of Gilt sort of blended into my skin while still looking gorgeously intense, whereas the areas where I use Gilded Honey becomes more visibly highlighted and gives off a peachy golden vibe. I would assume that if you have more neutral undertones than I do, both would be equal in intensity, but on the other hand Whisper of Gilt may be more intense if you have cooler undertones, and so on. But I am being real picky here, both are SUPER crazy intense and gorgeous and I probably wouldn't be able to tell them apart.

So on this day I applied it lightly on my forehead, on the tip of my nose, and on my cheekbones (though you can barely see it....), and just a tad bit on the cupid's bow. This highlighter gives off the most natural finish and it didn't severely emphasize my pores (though with any highlighter, too much will do just that).

Now that I have compared the two, I don't thinking owning both is necessary especially since a lot of brands have over time created ones that are very similar to Whisper of Gilt (and maybe even better!).

What are your thoughts on this palette/highlighter? Please let me know! :D

XOXO,

HaeMin
